Some have approached me just to gain more information about the landscape of the industry and the roles available to them. Some have wanted help articulating and packaging their skills to help them progress to the next level. Others however have come to me looking for a complete change. So from Accountants, HR Managers to Educators, these guys have looked at the events industry and thought that maybe, just, maybe, they had what it takes to enter into the world of event management.
The amazing thing for me as a mentor is that no session is the same. Some sessions have a plan and we stick to it, although to be honest this is rare! For others we have a topic to delve into, such as event strategy or event marketing, which allows tools and techniques to be explained, discussed and creatively to flow. For others it’s about following their path and for me to identify the topics that i feel would be beneficial to cover.
The frequency and length of the mentoring sessions I run are different for everyone depending on a number of factors. Typically, people choose to embark on a mentoring programme with 3-4 sessions in mind. These sessions have been over 3 weeks or 3 months. For some though a full day’s session has worked for them.
Whatever the journey though, each individual has come away feeling:
1. More confident about their ability
2. More knowledgeable, with tolls and techniques they can apply
3. Have clear direction, enthusiasm and ambition for the future.
